PRIESTHOOD AND CELIBACY
Abbé Bernard de Lacoste
Why does the Latin Church only admit celibates to the priesthood? Can or should this rule change? Curiously, many Catholics, even among priests and bishops, are unable to answer these questions. At the same time, the priestly ordination of married men is seen by many of our contemporaries as a remedy for the shortage of priests and the difficulties of 21st-century priestly life. But is it really a good solution?
This book provides a clear answer, drawing on not only theological but also historical, canonical, scriptural, and spiritual arguments. Rejecting modernist errors, it faithfully follows the teaching of the Magisterium of the Church, the Church Fathers, and Saint Thomas Aquinas to demonstrate the beauty of priestly chastity.
Abbé Bernard de Lacoste, a priest of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X, is the director of the seminary in Ecône (Switzerland). He teaches moral theology and canon law there.
