This spiritual directory is entirely by the venerable Father Libermann: Instructions to Missionaries (1851), Letters, and Regulations (1849) which he himself developed.
We cannot have a better guide. By following him, we will absorb his spirit, which is all about self-denial, energy, gentleness, and union with God. With him, we will learn to be religious and missionaries as he wished them to be. Beside him, we will seek light in our doubts, peace in our troubles, comfort in our disappointments and sorrows.
In the various situations where our vocation calls us, and where, sometimes, such harsh sacrifices are demanded of us, how happy we would be to have a friend, a confidant, a director, a father nearby! Here he is.
Through his deeply insightful words, this Father will continue to form us in the same spirit, to guide us in sure paths, to constantly elevate us towards the supernatural, in the various countries and various tasks where obedience has placed us and
keeps us.
And it is in this way that, fully faithful to our vocation, we will make the best possible use of life; we will save our souls, by doing all the good that God places within our reach around us...
François-Marie-Paul Libermann (1802-1852), a Jew converted to Catholicism, ordained a priest in 1841, was the founder of the Society of the Holy Heart of Mary, aggregated in 1848 to the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, of which he became the Superior General.
