Although condemned by Pius IX in Quanta cura and by Gregory XVI after him, religious freedom gained acceptance in the Church: Vatican II recognized it as a right inherent to the human person, and Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI made it the rule of their governance. Archbishop Lefebvre zealously pursued this error inherited from the principles of 1789, a practical negation of the divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
